WHAT IS A CELTIC CROSS/ST. PATRICK’S CROSS?
The Celtic Cross, also known as St. Patrick’s Cross, High Cross, or Irish Cross, is one of the most recognized symbols of Irish and Celtic heritage. Distinguished by the ring that surrounds the intersection of the cross, the Celtic Cross has deep roots in both Christian and pre-Christian traditions.
Although it is closely associated with Christianity today, the Celtic Cross likely predates the religion, with origins in earlier, possibly pagan, practices. It is believed that St. Patrick used the symbol when converting the Irish to Christianity in the 5th century, blending the Christian cross with familiar Celtic symbols such as the sun or the moon, to emphasize life and eternity.
Unlike traditional Christian crosses, which often focus on themes of suffering, the Celtic Cross is seen as a symbol of life, unity, and heritage. Today, it is cherished as a symbol of both faith and cultural identity, particularly among Irish, Scottish, and Welsh communities.
